Fred Heigel and Ken Krupp left us, and we are all a little poorer for not having them with us any more. We are all certainly a lot richer having had them with us for as long as we did... When you give more than you get, you get more than you expect in return. In Ken Krupp's case, I have spent the better part of my professional life as Ken's competitor. In those years I developed a deep regard for his professionalism and his management skills. Anyone who ever worked for him will tell you he was a 'good boss'. Since his retirement a few years ago, Ken and I had some very nice talks about what we were doing with The Beacon, and he often compared us to the weekly newspaper he and his brother, Walter, started together many years ago, The Port Clinton Herald. Those of us who have burned the midnight oils sweating over which ad to place where, or what good local story should be sacrificed for lack of space, hold Ken in high regard. He was a fine newspaperman, and he too gave more than he got. When I die, I hope that is what I'll be remembered for. If it's true, in the final analysis, put it on my tombstone. "John Schaffner --1949-???? - He gave more than he got." I'll be in good company with Fred Heigel and Ken Krupp.
