"Burhead" Hammer, 76, of Fremont, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Valley View in Fremont. He was born March 17, 1932 in Fostoria to Frank and Mary (Yost) Hammer. Melvin worked for Spieldenner's Floor Company as a carpet and tile installer for 20 years and then became self employed as a carpenter. He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Melvin loved fishing and working on lawnmowers and was voted by the News Messenger in 1988 as Best Junk Dealer in Sandusky County. Melvin is survived by his daughters, Mary (Steve) Beckman and Karen Hammer of Fremont; sisters, Alice Hark and Mary; and grandson, Zachary Beckman. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Albert Hammer. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St. Fremont. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Wendelin Cemetery.
